Our apologies.  You have run into a glitch which is experienced by a few new customers.  We suspect it is some over-protective software on your computer (such as Trusteer Rapport) which has interfered with the normal sales process when proceeding to payment and only seems to occur for new customers.

Please try making the payment again. Your items should still be in your shopping cart, so click here to reach your shopping cart. When you proceed to checkout, you may find you are already logged in and ready to go. If not, there's no need to re-register as a new customer.  Instead, this time sign in as a returning customer, using your chosen password. (Note that if you start the whole sales process again, you could end up with two items in your cart, so be careful not to accidentally buy two!  If that does happen, merely change the 2 to a 1 then click on the circular blue arrows alongside to update your cart.)

That should do the trick, and all will go smoothly.  If it doesn't, or if you have other questions, just contact us on sales@gersociety.org.uk.  Let us know what it is that your are trying to buy, and we will see that you get it.

If you would like a PDF guide to how to browse the Files Emporium and make a purchase, with many screen-shots as illustrations, simply ask and we will be pleased to send it.

If you did run into the problem but this resolves it, it would be helpful to let us know very briefly what protective software you are aware of having on your computer.  There is no obligation whatsoever on you to do this, but it enables us to compile more data to try to understand the underlying cause.

No problem - you can send us money another way.

If you wish to pay by card and in particular if you've experienced difficulties with Paypal, this form allows you to send us money using our Nochex payments provider. They accept all major credit and debit cards. As well as putting in a description of what the payment is for, do email sales@gersociety.org.uk  providing full details of your order, name and address etc. Please enter sum to be paid without the £ sign (e.g. 1.00 and not £1.00).

Photograph Sales

D16/3Photograph 6034 (Album 6, photo 34):  Class D16/3 62513 at Bury St Edmunds

10107

Photograph 10107 (Album 10, photo 107): Berwick-on-Tweed station in the mid 1950s, looking south.

What is on offer?

We offer scans of black and white photographs. The scan of a photo will be supplied as a PDF file. The best way to enjoy the picture is to view it as large as possible on your screen. If you wish, however, you will be able to print a copy of it at roughly postcard size. To do this, on the Print... menu, under page scaling select ‘none’. The resolution should be comparable to the original photo. If you prefer, you could produce an A4 print – set the page scaling to ‘Fit to printable area’ and choose landscape orientation. There will of course be an inevitable loss in resolution which may or may not prove acceptable.

What is available?

There are well over 2500 photos in the catalogue. They are from the collection of Richard Adderson and Graham Kenworthy, who are very happy to make them accessible to all who would be interested. Some photos are of locomotives, and others are of scenes such as stations or junctions. They extend beyond the GE area and cover all the sections of the LNER – GN, GC, NE, several joint lines including the M&GN and the Cheshire Lines Committee, and Scotland.

How can I find out what photos there are?

We have compiled a spreadsheet which is arranged in three forms – in alphabetical order of locations, in order of locomotive class, or listed by the reference number of the photograph.

You can download the spreadsheets here:-

pdfAll_photos_by_location.pdf

pdfAll_photos_by_loco_class.pdf

xlsAll_photos_in_numerical_order.xls

If we have the date for a photo, this is indicated in the listings. Most of the others were taken during the 1950s and early 1960s.

To help you to make a decision, there is another file which contains a thumbnail picture of every single photograph in the collection. You may download it here.

How much do they cost?

The price is just 25p a photo, minimum payment £1. There is nothing extra to add for delivery.

How do I place an order?

We ask you to fill in an order form which you access here. After completion, you are directed to the PayPal system to make payment. It is not necessary to have a PayPal account; instead you may opt to proceed as a guest and use your card.

How will I receive my order?

The file of each photo is of the order of 1 MB in size, so the entire collection amounts to a few gigabytes – far too much to be able to store them all on our website. We cannot provide them as downloads, therefore. Instead, on receipt of your order we will send your files to you on-line via an email from WeTransfer, a file transfer website. This will happen within 24 hours at the most, but we hope it will normally be much sooner than that.

The small print:

What you are purchasing is the image, for your personal enjoyment and information. Its copyright does not come with it. The actual files are copyright the Great Eastern Railway Society. We have made all reasonable efforts to track down the owners of the originals themselves. If we have inadvertently overlooked someone, we would be grateful to be informed so we can put things right.

Re-use of the images:

Our aim is to be as generous as we reasonably can be in response to requests to reproduce one of the images. In cases where the emphasis is on education or information (such as local history or enthusiasts’ outlets), we would try to respond by allowing it in return for some publicity for our own Sales, especially for the photographs and the Files Emporium.

Our PDF files are subject to a measure of security. A purchaser can readily make a back-up copy of it and can do a print from it. More advanced editing, like embedding it in another document, is locked. Where we agree to a request, therefore, you will need an ‘unlocked’ copy of that file. Provided you have already purchased one of the originals, this will be supplied at no extra cost.

Photograph 10107 (Album 10, photo 107): Berwick-on-Tweed station in the mid 1950s, looking north.

What is on offer?

We offer scans of black and white photographs. The scan of a photo will be supplied as a JPEG file. The best way to enjoy the picture is to view it as large as possible on your screen. If you wish, however, you will be able to print a copy of it. You could also include it in a slide show on your computer or on a digital photo frame - but only for your personal enjoyment, please (see 'Re-use of the Images' below).  You will be able to adjust its brightness and contrast to your taste with any photo-editing software.

What is available?

There are well over 2900 photos in the catalogue. Some photos are of locomotives, and others are of scenes such as stations or junctions. They extend beyond the GE area and cover all the sections of the LNER – GN, GC, NE, several joint lines including the M&GN and the Cheshire Lines Committee, and Scotland.

Where have the photographs come from?

Most are from the collection of Richard Adderson and Graham Kenworthy (in the albums they have numbered from 1 to 27, with gaps), and they are very happy to make them accessible to all who would be interested.

Album 28 is reserved for photographs from other sources. If you have any photographs you would be prepared to share with others in a similar way, they will be gratefully received: they must be free of any copyright issues, of course.

Chris Durrant is one of our members who has generously responded to that invitation. He was a senior signal engineer whose work gave him access to places out of reach of the general public, such as the trackside and the interior of signal boxes. His photographs, more than 300 of them, make up albums 29 and 30. They were typically taken towards the end of the 20th century, and nearly all of them are dated.

How can I find out what photos there are?

We have compiled a spreadsheet which is arranged in three forms – in alphabetical order of locations, in order of locomotive class, or listed by the reference number of the photograph.

You can download the spreadsheets here:-

pdf All photos by location(1.68 MB)

pdf All photos by loco class(1.67 MB)

spreadsheet All photos in numerical order(516 KB)

If we have the date for a photo, this is indicated in the listings. Most of the others were taken during the 1950s and early 1960s.

Once you have used the spreadsheet to make a provisional selection of photos, you will doubtless find it helpful to take a look at their thumbnail pictures. These are arranged in 21 files, one for each album.  (The first one or two digits of a photograph's number give its album. Thus 26112 is photo 112 in album 26, and 5002 is photo 2 in album 5.)

Here are those files, which you may find helpful to enlarge when you view them:-

How much do they cost?

It is not necessary to have a PayPal account; instead you may opt to proceed as a guest and use your card. (If PayPal chooses not to offer you the guest option, just send an email to sales@gersociety.org.uk and we will arrange for you to pay via Nochex instead. There is a Nochex form here.)

How will I receive my order?

Re-use of the images:

The photos are offered for your personal enjoyment. If you wish to use them beyond that (such as for illustrations in magazines or books, for including in a talk or as a display at a meeting), we ask you to get in touch with us first. You can do this via an email to sales@gersociety.org.uk.

The BR Eastern Region Magazine

brecover

Following our successful scanning and production of the GER and LNER Magazines, our latest release is the British Railways (Eastern Region) Magazine on a set of two DVDs. Files are there containing every edition, fully word-searchable, from the first one in January 1948 to the final one in June 1963. You will need a computer with a DVD drive to read the files.

Here are some images from the magazines:-

LNER Magazine

top image

The London and North Eastern Railway Magazine was a staff magazine. Although the GER had become a consituent part of the new LNER in 1923, it continued to produce its own GER magazine until the end of 1926. Our GER Magazine DVDs include the issues up to that date.

The Magazines here cover the period from the start of 1927 until the LNER became part of British Railways at the end of 1947. Each year made up a volume, so there are 21 volumes in all.

Many of the articles were of contemporary railway interest or described parts of the region which the LNER served. For example the 1935 volume included articles about Felixstowe & the Felix Hotel, the Yorkshire Pullman, C.W.S Developments at Pelaw near Newcastle, and Repairing Locomotives in Scotland. All were fully illustrated with photographs.

Like any staff magazine it also carried news of its employees and what they were doing. There were reports from the social and sporting clubs and staff outings, for instance, as well as notes on presentations, retirements and deaths. During the Second World War news of staff in the forces (and in the home guard) also featured.

lne1lne2lne3

Individual copies of the magazine or bound annual volumes occasionally become available via second hand outlets, but because of their scarcity and interest they fetch a high price.

What the Great Eastern Railway Society has done

LNER DVD

We have spent money raised from our Sales activities by commissioning a professional scan of all 21 volumes – over 11,000 pages in all. This has converted them into Acrobat files, and in addition the use of optical character recognition software has for the first time ever made them all word-searchable.

How this exercise can benefit you

If your interest is in the LNER itself, in railway or social history generally, or in local history relating to the region, you may wish to purchase the files of the 21 volumes. These are available as a professionally copied double DVD at what we hope is an affordable price. For GER Society members this is £10, for non-members £15 – still a tremendous bargain, surely? Both prices include P&P. You can order by post through the Traditional Sales List, or buy online now.

If you are researching your family history, your interest may be solely the information we have now made accessible rather than those 21 volumes themselves. To meet your needs far more economically, we are offering a search facility on your behalf – you will find the details on the genealogy page of this web site.

The Great Eastern Railway Magazine

The Great Eastern Railway Magazine was a staff magazine which the railway company first issued in January 1911. It continued to appear monthly until the end of 1926, by which time the old GER had long become a constituent part of the London and North Eastern Railway. Each year made up a volume, so there were 16 volumes in all.

Many of the articles were of contemporary railway interest or described parts of the region which the GER served. For example the 1913 volume included articles about the Locomotive, Carriage and Wagon Department; the speeds of goods trains; Electric traction on railways; Norfolk tobacco; Thorpeness; ‘The Dutch Fenland and our own’; and George Borrow’s connections with East Anglia. All were fully illustrated with photographs.

Like any staff magazine it also carried news of its employees and what they were doing. There were reports from the GER Musical Society and Cricket Club, for instance, as well as notes on presentations, retirements and deaths. From 1914 to 1918 came lists of staff who had enrolled in the armed forces, followed later by the names of those killed in action.

Individual copies of the magazine or bound annual volumes occasionally become available via second hand outlets, but because of their scarcity and interest they fetch a high price.

What the Great Eastern Railway Society has done

GER DVD

We have spent money raised from our Sales activities by commissioning a professional scan of all 16 volumes. This has converted them into Acrobat files, and in addition the use of optical character recognition software has for the first time ever made them all word-searchable.

How this benefits you

If your interest is in the GER itself, in railway or social history generally, or in local history relating to the region, you may wish to purchase the files of the 16 volumes. These are available as a professionally copied double DVD at what we hope is an affordable price. For Society members this is £10, for non-members £15 – still a tremendous bargain, surely? Both prices include P&P. You can order by post via the traditional sales list or buy online.

If you are researching your family history, your interest may be solely the information we have now made accessible rather than those 16 volumes themselves. To meet your needs far more economically, we are offering a search facility on your behalf – you will find the details on the genealogy page of this web site.
