RH104: Your British Railways, BR 1951.
NEW MAY 2025. This is a book published by British Railways in 1951 to keep the general public informed about all its many different activities. Its introduction begins "This is Festival year, and Britain is proudly 'At Home' to the world."
It was far more than another booklet. It was a lavish production, priced as highly as two shillings. Its pages were huge, considerably bigger than A4 in size. The wrap-round cover was in colour.
The 48 inside pages, all in black and white, used glossy paper. There was some text, but its main appeal is likely to be its quality photographs - no fewer than 140 of them. They are superbly evocative of so many aspects of mid-century BR. The larger ones take up most of a page, while at the other exteme another page has a set of twelve captioned pictures describing a factory's day out to London for its employees all organised by BR.,
The centre spread shows a large cut-away drawing of one of their planned new Britannia Pacifics.
