SG073: Plans for a new signal box at Horsemoor near March, GER 1899.
NEW APRIL 2025. The railway layout at March kept expanding, and in 1899 a new signal box was proposed at Horsemoor, just outside the town in the direction of Stonea and Ely.
Here you get a copy of GER drawing number 24893 showing the new track and signalling to be associated with it. The box is not given a name, but the drawing bears a pencilled inscription "Horse More" (sic).
There is no drawing of the box itself, but some specifications relating to it are included, eg "A notice board to be provided and fixed in the signal box 6 feet by 3 feet for affixing special orders &c".
As a bonus we have added a more recent photograph selected from our Sales collection which shows a Class 31 with a freight going over the crossing next to the box.
We must thank Peter Churchman, a retired signal engineer who belongs to the Midland Railway Society not the GERS. He provided the scan of the drawing which is in his possession, and generously agreed that we might share it via the Files Emporium.
