MG022: Railway Gazette Volume 64 - January to June 1936.
NEW JULY 2025. The Railway Gazette was a large-format publication for professionals. It came out weekly. One volume covered six months, 26 issues.
What you get here is Volume 64, from January to June 1936. It was scanned from a big heavy bound volume, so the covers and the adverts are not there. The editorial pages are complete, however. They include occasional tuck-in supplements on diesel traction and electric traction - these often got separated from the main magazines, but here they are all present. In total the file contains just over 1250 pages.
There are several illustrations, both photographs and drawings. There is a single colour plate, depicting suggested liveries for SR locomotives.
The original seems to have been in good condition. A stamp at the front reveals it had been part of the LNER library at Liverpool Street, where someone seems to have worked through each issue, picked out all articles and snippets which related to the LNER and marked them with a big ink tick. These never obscure the writing, though - and if your interest is the LNER they at least serve to highlight what to look at!
We have built the file from scans by our member David Allen, who we thank for generously agreeing we might use them. It is word-searchable and the official very comprehensive index is included. We have added bookmarks to each issue.
A separate set of bookmarks lead to items of GE interest. These include a sleeper-creosoting cylinder destined for Lowestoft, the new Eastern Counties Surrey Street bus station at Norwich (with some excellent photos), a Christmas card from Stratford, the new Harwich boat train and a mansion which was transported brick by brick from Ipswich to Somerset for a customer. You may be familiar with the LNER posters of individual east coast resorts, but will still get a surprise to see how they were designed to fit together side by side.
The full index may be consulted HERE.
The file is inevitably a big one (around 170 MB). It will be made available to download as soon as payment has been made, but because of its size that operation may take a few minutes. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
