RH037 The Norfolk Railway
NEW JANUARY 2016. This is the book 'The First Railway in Norfolk' by George Dow, published by the LNER in 1944.
The very first line was from Yarmouth Vauxhall via Reedham to what was later to become the goods depot at Norwich Thorpe. A branch was built from Reedham to Lowestoft. The Norfolk Railway then became responsible for the line from Norwich to Brandon where it made an end-on junction with the ECR via Cambridge to London. Finally came the branch from Wymondham to Dereham and Fakenham.
The book deals with these in three chapters entitled Beginnings, Progress, and From the Norfolk Railway to the LNER. They are well illustrated with numerous sketches and etchings, a map and a dozen photographs. The final page in the book is Appendix A, summarising the weekday service between Yarmouth and Norwich in 1845, 1867, 1939 and 1944. Appendix B (The locomotives of the Norfolk Railway) was on a separate folded insert at the back of the book and is included in this word-searchable file.
