NEW MAY 2016. This is certainly not in our area! It relates to what is for us a distant outpost of the LNER, extending from Glasgow to Fort William and on to Mallaig. The booklet is in the same series as the Eastern Union Railway (file RH036) and The First Railway in Norfolk (file RH037), however, and because the scans for this third one came our way it seemed helpful to make it available as well.

It was written by George Dow, and was published by the LNER in 1944 to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the section of the line from Craigendoran to Fort William.

The book contains a large number of good black-and-white photographs. It has four chapters entitled Historical Survey; Engineering Features; Locomotives; and Train Services and Other Features.

The book concludes with a set of fold-out pages, also present in the file. Appendix A gives a plan and drawings of a typical island platform station on the line. Appendix B is the gradient profile for the route, C gives drawings of their original first and third class saloon carriages, and D is a table of data for North British Railway and LNER Locomotives used regularly on the West Highland Line.
