LM070: Survey of modern freight rolling stock, British Railways 1952.
NEW JANUARY 2024. In September 1952 British Railways held an exhibition of modern freight rolling stock at Battersea Wharf. This well produced 32-page booklet was issued to mark the occasion.
It begins with a two-page introduction by their then Chairman describing the thinking and progress of B.R. on their carriage of freight so far. The main contents then give photographs and informative descriptions of 44 different items they had come up with. Not all are rolling stock - they include things such as a wagon unloading machine, and the sequence concludes with no fewer than twelve different containers. Some items are given a full page, others are displayed two to a page. You can see the complete list HERE.
The booklet concludes with a table of their main types of wagon, giving the total number of each one they possessed. This is followed by contact details for the six regional Commercial Superintendents.
The British Railways Magazine for November 1952 featured a page giving an illustrated account of the exhibition, and this is also included in the file (derived from our scans of the complete Eastern Region editions).
The file is word-searchable and has been provided with bookmarks. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
