RC025 The British Transport Commission Sixth Annual Report, 1953
NEW DECEMBER 2013. The sixth annual Report of the British Transport Commission, 1953. It comprises 94 pages of text (including graphs and bar charts), eight pages each displaying a single photograph and a total of four blank pages. The file sets these out exactly as in the original, with two exceptions: pages where you would have turned the book sideways now appear in landscape format; and the photographs which were stapled in the middle of the book are now located at the end to avoid interrupting the narrative. It is word-searchable, and is provided with bookmarks for rapid access to the main sections.
The BTC was responsible for more than just British Railways. Other activities included British Road Services, London Transport, buses of the Tilling group and the Scottish bus group, canals, some docks and shipping, hotels and catering, and technical development and research.
This report assessed progress made during 1953 and looked ahead to future plans and prospects. The full accounts for the year were published in a separate volume (not available in the Files Emporium), but the report summarises receipts and expenditure under the various headings.
