TP023 Timetables for selected ER branches, Summer 1960
NEW JANUARY 2018. These are extracts from the British Railways Eastern Region timetable dated 13 June to 11 September 1960. They feature selected branch lines, many of which have since closed.
Steam had just virtually disappeared from East Anglia, and British Railways were re-casting the services for diesels in the hope of attracting more custom and so save the branch lines from closure. They certainly tried. Dereham, for example, had by far the fastest and best service it had ever enjoyed: trains from Norwich arrived roughly hourly, and most continued alternately to Wells or to Kings Lynn.
The other branches whose timetables appear are: Hatfield, Luton and Dunstable; Hitchin and Bedford; St Margarets and Buntingford; Wickford and Southminster; St Pancras, South Tottenham and Barking; Witham and Maldon East; Witham and Braintree; Long Melford and Bury St Edmunds; Marks Tey, Halstead, Sudbury, Haverhill and Cambridge; Ipswich and Felixstowe Beach; Saxmundham and Aldeburgh; Audley End, Saffron Walden and Bartlow; Cambridge and Mildenhall; Cambridge and Bedford; Cambridge, St Ives and March; Peterborough, Wellingborough and Northampton; March, Wisbech and Kings Lynn; Lynn and Hunstanton; Thetford and Swaffham; and Norwich, Wroxham, North Walsham, Mundesley, Cromer, Sheringham and Melton Constable.
Many of the timetables have '(Diesel Trains)' in their heading. For the others all the services rostered for a diesel have a 'D' at the top of their column.
