RC030 Cheap Day Tickets in the Eastern Counties, LNER 1939
NEW AUGUST 2014. This cheaply produced 36-page booklet is dated January 1939. Its main content is a comprehensive list of cheap day return fares available on the GE Section outside the London Area. It also covers the GNR between Peterborough and Hitchin (including the Ramsey branch) and Cambridge and Shepreth (but not beyond). The M&GN section is not covered apart from bookings from GER stations to West Runton and Sheringham, but both parts of the N&S Joint are included. The fares quoted will be the “N” fares of 1st October 1937 and would have remained current until introduction of the “R” fares on 1st May 1940. It is likely that these cheap day facilities were largely unaffected by the war until the general abolition (by government order) of cheap fares in October 1942.
The information is tabulated, so you can find the cost of a cheap day return from (say) Wymondham to Foulsham or Cold Norton to Prittlewell. The booklet is generally displayed here as a series of two-page spreads.
The last four pages summarise the other facilities available in the Eastern Counties, including Rambler’s Tickets and party tickets, and gives a list of travel agents in the area.
