RC044 Conditions relating to Passengers' Tickets and Luggage, BR 1950
NEW MARCH 2017. This is what a ticket referred to when it mentioned terms and conditions. The one here is a 24-page booklet on cheap paper, published by the Railway Executive on 1 May 1950 as their reference RCH 60362. Its full title is 'Conditions upon which tickets including season tickets are issued. Regulations and conditions applicable to passengers' luggage. General information.'
Day and half-day returns and workmen's tickets are all included. Split ticketing, by which you buy a series of tickets for a single train journey and thereby save some money, is allowable nowadays but was then strictly banned. Tickets and luggage involving conveyance by water are considered. Platform tickets are there, and so too are the regulations and conditions applying to passengers' luggage both accompanied and unaccompanied.
There is a section on lost and unclaimed property, and another relating to the terms which apply if you deposit your baggage for a while at a left luggage office. The latter includes a copy of the unintentionally hilarious list which appeared as a poster at main stations and brightened up the journey. Naturally it gives the prices for your bags and suitcases and umbrellas and the like. Just in case you wondered, it also tells you what you will have to pay if your luggage consists of a harp or a cash register or a side car. You are warned that any item you are carrying which has a length plus girth of more than 25 feet (!) will incur triple charges. This must have been an early version of the list, which doubtless was expanded as the need arose - the one here does not have things such as billiard cues which appeared on the later posters.
The final two pages in the booklet are their document RCH 60362/1 which relates to the London Area passenger charges scheme, in which the London Tilbury and Southend section gets a special mention.
