RG059: The GER Tourist Guide to the Continent 1893.
NEW SETEMBER 2023. The Great Eastern Railway were in the forefront of those opening up Europe to British tourists, in an attempt to gain custom for their shipping services. This is their Tourist Guide to the Continent, dated 1893. It proclaims that it is a new edition - their fourteenth annual issue! Inside it advertises the new GER route to the Hook of Holland.
It is a stiff-covered 168-page book, edited by Percy Lindley who was responsible for several of their early guides. The copy available for scanning had its spine reinforced with modern blue tape.
It covers Holland, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland in that somewhat haphazard order. Germany was interpreted liberally since it includes Vienna. This publication was too early for photographs, but it includes many black and white drawings.
The book ends with some tips on cycling abroad, with a few suggested tours. A comment on the surface of each road is given - bumpy brick, good gravel, etc.
The file is word-searchable and has bookmarks to its main sections. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
