NEW APRIL 2023. 'Rambles in Suffolk' was published by the LNER. It is undated, but appears to be from the 1930's.

Its purpose was to suggest walks from country stations. Cheap day ticket prices from Ipswich and Colchester are quoted. The 82 pages contain twelve of them, which you can see listed HERE.  You will notice that, despite the title on the cover of the book, not all the walking is in Suffolk - Manningtree, Sturmer and Little Dunmow are all in Essex. Bernard Reeves, the author, seems to have taken his brief to be walks accessible by train from Ipswich or Colchester as a base.  Compare this with his 'Rambles in Cambridgeshire' where his outings from Cambridge include a ramble around Bury St Edmunds and Ickworth Park!

For each walk you get a description of the area, a map of the walk and instructions for the route. Footpaths are often used, but some of the time you are taken along what were then quiet country lanes but which may not be so ideal for a stroll nowadays. The text is illustrated with black-and-white line drawings.

None of the rambles is a gentle one.  The shortest is more than ten miles, and the longest is literally a marathonm 26-mile circular trek from Bentley station.

Folded in at the back is a map which depicts Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. This shows the railway lines prominently in red, each with its LNER timetable number. They are superimposed on thinner black lines which are the bus routes marked with their service numbers.
