RC061: Freight Train Loads Book for the GE Section, BR 1964.
NEW APRIL 2022. This is a 52-page card-covered book entitled 'Freight Train Load Book - Instructions for the Loading and Working of Freight Trains'. It was issued by British Railways in April 1964, and deals with the GE Section.
It starts with guidance useful to goods guards on how to arrive at a value for the effective number of wagons on a train, which might have different types of wagon with some loaded, some partially filled and some empty. This part concludes with a set of ready reckoner tables to arrive at a final total.
That is followed by fourteen pages of tables which indicate the constraints imposed on the length of freight trains by each different section of route on the GE.
Then come ten pages listing the maximum load for each type of locomotive. Apart from provision for steam working between Whitemoor and Peterborough, by 1964 these were all diesels. They range from shunters to classes 31, 37 and 40.
