RC048 The Railway Police, 1900.
NEW APRIL 2019. In January and February 1900 the Railway Magazine published a pair of eight-page articles with the title 'Our Railway Police'. They were written by H J Prytherch of the Great Eastern Railway. In them he gave an overall survey of the contemporary railway police and the work they did. His account covered several of the main railways, not just the GER.
The articles were illustrated with photographs of things such as a robber's tools and vandalised carriage window straps. One rather tasteful picture, courtesy of the Midland Railway, shows a pair of revolvers - they had been used by two of their passengers who had committed suicide!
As a bonus, a brief account of the origins of the railway police is included. It comes from a 1913 GER Magazine, in an article on the early days of the ECR. There is also some information about the author of the two Railway Magazine articles with a photograph of him, plus some guidance on how you can find out more about crime on our railways from our CDs of Minutes Summaries.
The file concludes with another eight-page article, this time from 1953 with no illustrations. It is called 'Policemen in Transport', and is one of the hundreds of articles in the British Transport Review of the time. (If you want to see the rest, they are all available on the Transport Age DVD.)
