RE042 Modern British Permanent Way 1915

NEW OCTOBER 2018.  Between 1911 and 1914 the magazine Railway News published a series of articles on modern British permanent way.  Cecil J Allen of the GER, who was a metallurgist by training, was commissioned to write them.  In 1915 the publishers issued the updated reprints of the separate articles in the form of a 156-page book, and that is what this file contains.

Topics covered include the history of the modern bull-head steel rail; the manufacture of the steel; the rolling, testing and inspection of the rails; fishplates and fish-bolts; chairs and their fastenings; keys; the selection of timber for sleepers and its treatment; ballast; rail joints, creep and the spacing of sleepers; switches (i.e., points), both simple and three-way; slip roads and scissors crossings; and the use of the latest manganese steel for switches and crossings.  The account is illustrated with photographs and line drawings.

The file has bookmarks to all the sections and is word-searchable. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
