RH085: The Tottenham and Hampstead Junction Railway, 1885.

NEW DECEMBER 2020. Back in 1865 powers were obtained for the Great Eastern and the Midland Railway Companies to work the Tottenham and Hampstead Junction Railway. A joint committee was set up for this purpose in July 1885. This eleven-page file consists of four original documents relating to that occasion.

The first of these, headed The Midland & Great Eastern Joint Committee, carries the title 'Instructions to Station Masters and others for the working of the raIlway and the general conduct of the business and the keeping of the accounts'.  It begins "On and from Saturday, August 1st, 1885, the staff of the Tottenham and Hampstead Junction Railway will be a joint staff." Its three pages go on to describe who will be responsible for what. It is signed by John Noble on behalf of the Midland Railway and William Birt for the GER, and is dated July 1885.

The second three-page document was given exactly the same title, has the same two signatories and is also dated July 1885. This one concentrates on details such as maintenance, breakdown trains, lost luggage and how the proposed accounting would work.

The third item, also three pages, appears to be the minutes of the Joint Officers' Committee for 29 April and 12 May 1885. It includes many of the decisions which were conveyed in the previous two documents. There is also a list of all those considered to be joint staff of the line - broken down station by station and recording their individual names, their posts and their salary/wages.

The final two pages show an earlier agreement between the GER, the Midland Railway and the Tottenham and Hampstead Junction Railway dated 20 December 1871.
