Colchester c1955 - the model - Hornby N2/1 to N2/2

LNER 0-6-2T Class N2 - at Colchester  
As the pattern of services changes and new locomotives became available, ten Class N2 0-6-2T locomotives were again sent to East Anglia in the period 1951-1956 and allocated to Parkeston 69502/51/2/9/61/6/90 and Colchester 69550/5/8 for working the Harwich, Clacton, and local Ipswich-Colchester services.

Stratford Works also undertook maintenance of numerous N2 class locomotives and the photograph of King’s Cross/Hatfield allocated N2 69494 at Colchester, was probably a running in turn and could have been taken in February 1954, when it received a “Non-Classified”, or March 1955 when it had a “General” overhaul.

LNER 0-6-2T Class N2 - the model
Therefore, adding an N2 to my Colchester c1955 loco fleet has long been on my “wish list” and recently one was spotted on eBay for the £40, which was worth acquiring.



The Hornby LNER N2 0-6-2T model 69522 is apparently based on the preserved example, which is an original GNR build N2/1, whereas the members of the class based at Colchester, and 69558 which I planned to model, were of the later contractor built N2/2.



The main variations are N2/1 were left hand drive, N2/2 right-hand drive, and the Hornby model has condensing gear, which those based at Colchester did not. Therefore, not only is it case of removing the condensing gear but also change various fittings such as steps, lubricators, steam pipes etc, but probably the most difficult was removing the moulded bunker coal, for the real thing, as it was part of the body. 



69558 was chosen as I had photographs of a similar date of both sides of the loco, which was useful as it was not identical to other to N2/2 built at the same time. The smokebox destination board brackets had been removed, different pipework configurations, the handrail was in a different position, and I added lamp brackets, omitted by Hornby.

 

One thing I haven’t added is the paint mark around the smokebox number plate and the smokebox hinges, which was also done to a Colchester B12/3!
