Roger Kingstone 7mm models. was created by Paul Goldsmith (paulg)
The following is a small selection of Roger Kingstone’s 7mm locomotives, with his comments. Photographs by Paul Goldsmith or as shown.
GER No 1 class 2-4-0.
No 1 is a Peter Kay kit, believed started by R Farmin, who had problems with the driving wheels, which were by Alan Gibson. I have fitted “Walsall” cast iron replacement driving wheels and Alan Gibson pony and tender wheels. There are no pick-ups, the loco and tender wheels are insulated on opposite sides and use an insulated coupling. The motor/gearbox is a Portiscap RG7 and the loco was painted by the late Phil Abbot.
GER No 20 as rebuilt as an 0-8-0
This I scratch built, with cast iron wheels and Modellers Mate motor/gearbox. The prominent front steam pipes presented a challenge but was solved by robbing one of the drawer handles on the desk I use as a workbench. The desk was obtained on a firewood “chit” when the office s at Norwich were being refurnished!
GER Tram 0-4-0T No 125
This was one of my first 7mm locomotives, made from a Highfield plastic body kit, much modified. It has a scratch-built underframe and uses an X-05 motor with Tri-ang Jinty OO wheels. The old Tri-ang axles were 5/32” diameter, shouldered and I found when the wheels were removed, they fitted on 1/8” silver steel rod, which allowed me to use 4mm gears.
GER 209 class 0-4-0ST No 228
This was made from a modified Springside kit, with new cab and crosshead and slide bars. Slaters wheels were used and a RG4 mechanism with new side-frames and modified 3/16” axles.
M&GN Class C 4-4-0 No 1
This engine is built from an Oldbury Models kit with Slaters driving and bogie wheels, RG7 mechanism and the tender wheels are cast iron. Another engine painted by the late Phil Abbot.
Colne Valley & Halstead Railway (CVHR) Nielson 0-4-2T No 1
This loco was scratch built using Alan Gibson wheels and modified RG7 mechanism with new side-frames.
CVHR Hawthorn Lesley 2-4-2T No 2
Work in progress and the noticeable rivet heads are proving very difficult to replicate. The loco is scratch built with Slaters wheels and a RG7 mechanism.
Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Hudswell-Clarke 0-6-0T No 1
The engine is scratch-built utilising Tri-ang B12 wheels and 1/8” axles, as with the GER No 125 above. The underframe is compensated with a RG4 mechanism fitted with new side-frames. Peter Thatcher specially etched the number and works plate, and the lining and lettering is by John Cockcroft.
Millwall Extension Railway Manning Wardle 2-4-0T No 6 Photograph by John Hobden
This locomotive was scratch built by the late Hugh Seaman, which I have re-motored and fitted Slaters wheels.
London Tilbury & Southend Railway 4-4-2T No 10 Grays. Photograph by John Hobden
Another locomotive built by the late Hugh Seaman, who built numerous 4mm and 7mm locomotives, which I have re-motored it with a John Hart motor/gearbox and again fitted with Slaters wheels.
GER Claud 4-4-0 No. 1883 Photograph by Roger Kingstone
About to pass Flower Woods level crossing (John Flower & Ray Woods were other "O" modellers known to me). The loco I built from a Mallard Models kit, runs on Cast iron wheels with a Modellers Mate mechanism and painted by Phil Abbott.
