The Railway and Travel Monthly was published by George Nokes (‘G A Sekon’) when he left the Railway Magazine following a disagreement. The first issue appeared in 1910.
It was in exactly the same format and style as its predecessor, even to the extent that the Railway Magazine’s Pertinent Paragraphs appeared as Apposite Aphorisms! It was intended to be a direct competitor, and its standard was at least as high and perhaps higher.
Most articles were about railways though there were also some excellent shipping ones, including the regular ‘Nautical News and Notes’ which comprised several pages of snippets accompanied by some interesting photographs. Road and air travel were less frequently covered, though at such an early date what did appear could be fascinating (such as news of the first fatality involving a British aviator).
In 1920 it changed its name to the Transport and Travel Monthly, but otherwise remained a very similar publication.
We have commissioned professional scans of all 152 issues up to its demise in 1922. We are using the bound copies owned by the NRM at York, but even they have a few gaps which we have managed to fill thanks to the HMRS.
The intention is to bring the magazine out later this year on a set of DVDs. In the meantime here are a few sample pages to whet your appetite (click to enlarge):-
