NEW JULY 2018.  British Railways had their own volunteer fire brigades to deal with emergencies.  This is their manual, a 92-page stiff-covered pocket booklet.  It was issued in June 1953 under their reference BR.7011.

The topics covered include all that their workers would need to know, ranging from the causes of fires to how to deal with them and rules for how to store things such as petroleum spirit and large stacks of timber safely.  There are no illustrations, but blank copies of the forms for the report on a fire and the fire warden's report are there as appendixes.  Another appendix provides a glossary of technical terms such as branch holder ("Any device for taking part of the weight and reaction of a branch at work. Must not be confused with monitors, portable directors or deluge sets which can be left unattended.") and bucket (which is exactly what you think it is!).

The file displays the booklet as two-page spreads, has bookmarks to all the sections and is word-searchable. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
