RW003 The history of the National Union of Railwaymen up to 1963

NEW MARCH 2018.  In 1963 the National Union of Railwaymen reached its 50th anniversary. To mark this it produced a 50-page booklet entitled 'N.U.R. Golden Jubilee Souvenir 1913-1963'.

The booklet contains several short but very informative articles, some of them accompanied by photographs.  The first one sets the scene in the earliest days of railways, which it calls the First Generation 1830-1870.  It goes on to describe the foundation of its predecessor, the A.S.R.S. (Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants). It continues through the 1890 Scottish railway strike, relations with the Labour Party, the first national railway strike and the founding of the N.U.R.  Then comes the first world war, the 1921 Railways Act, the 1926 General Strike, the 1930s depression, the second world war, the 1953 Transport Act and railway modernisation.  It concludes with a descrition of the structure and personnel of the union in 1963.

There is an overlap between the material in this file and in file RW006 (the NUR's booklet celebrate 150 years of railways and railwaymen in 1975) - the article about the general strike is identical, for example).  Therefore you will probably not wish to purchase both of the files. That one takes the story to a later date, of course, but if your interest lies more in the Union in the 1960s this one may well be your preference.

This file is word-searchable and has bookmarks to the main parts. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
