NEW MAY 2022. This is a 20-page booklet containing a reprint of the article 'Centenary of Railway Inspection', published in the Railway Gazette of 12 July 1940.
There are no illustrations. It includes a four-page Foreword, which may not have appeared in the original. The main article surveys the developing responsibilities of the Inspectorate since formed by the Board of Trade in 1840 - to approve of new works, to oversee safety (such as the matter of how passengers in a train might raise an alarm), and to investigate mishaps and accidents. It might be less well known that their responsibilities extended to tramways and trolleybus systems as well. There is a list of the Inspectors, always drawn from the officers of the Royal Engineers.
