RW016: How the BR Management Handled the ASLEF Strike of 1955.

NEW DECEMBER 2021. This is an 88-page card-covered book published by the British Transport Commission in 1956. Although printed, it was apparently intended for a very restricted circulation. Its front cover carried the word 'SECRET', and each copy was individually numbered - this one was No. 3.

The full title was "Railway Strike 1955 (ASLEF). A Record of the Emergency Arrangements put into Operation during the Period from 28 May to 14 June 1955."  It briefly described the events and planning leading up to the strike, then detailed how the BR Management handled affairs while the strike was in progress - not just running the railway and trying to keep the traffic moving, but also in matters such as publicity and relations with the press and the BBC. The lessons learned resulted in a whole series of suggestions of ways to do things better in a future occurrence of that sort. You can see the full contents list HERE.

This copy of the book contained two minor hand-written amendments. The file of it is word-searchable and has bookmarks to the main parts. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
