RC057: Guard's Instructions for Conductor Guard Working between Norwich & Kings Lynn, BR 1966.

NEW AUGUST 2021.  Passenger trains from Dereham to Wells ceased in October 1964. A DMU service continued to operate between Norwich, Dereham and King's Lynn. The guard worked as a conductor guard and these are his instructions for that job, issued by the Eastern Region of the British Railways Board in July 1966.

It is a 14-page cyclostyled booklet with card covers. There are fare tables for the ordinary public and for privilege ticket holders, but it contains no illustrations.

It may come as a surprise that at such a late stage all the small intermediate stations were still staffed and issued tickets. There was a warning that, "commencing on a date to be advised", they would become non-booking stations and all tickets would have to be bought on the train.

There was a list of the equipment a conductor guard would need and instructions on how to operate the Setright machine. The arrangements regarding the necessary accountancy were described. Norwich and Lynn were the two paying-in stations, so a special routine was needed for a guard who started and finished his shift at Dereham.

These arrangements were destined to be short lived. The Dereham to King's Lynn passenger service was closed in September 1968, and the remaining stub from Wymondham to Dereham succumbed in October 1969.
