For enthusiasts, researchers and modellers of the Great Eastern Railway

RG043: New Holidays in Essex, GER 1892.

NEW JUNE 2021.  This book, entitled 'New Holidays in Essex with rail and walking routes, boating, fishing and shooting notes', was produced by the GER in 1892. Anyone expecting it to feature resorts such as Walton, Clacton and Dovercourt will be disappointed. The key word in the title is 'new'. The GER route from Shenfield to Southend had opened in 1888-1889, and this book was designed to entice visitors to the area that line served.

The book starts with Brentwood, described as the gateway to the region - almost a holiday destination in itself, the writer implies, with its truly rural walks. It then takes you via Shenfield to "the ancient little place Billericay (called Bill-ricky)". Locations such as Maldon, Mersea Island, Burnham-on-Crouch, Southminster, Rayleigh and Canvey Island are featured before you finally reach Southend. You can see the full list of places in the index HERE.

It is an oblong 75-page book with many line drawings. There is no evidence of the provision of a map. The editor is Percy Lindley, who produced several guide books for the GER around this time.

The copy scanned does not have its original covers. It has been professionally bound with the 1885 edition of his 'Walks in Epping Forest', which is available in the Files Emporium as File RG044.

The book is word-searchable and has bookmarks to all its main sections. The file will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
