RH091: The Story of the LNER in World War Two, 1947.

NEW MAY 2021.  This is the book entitled 'By Rail to Victory: The Story of the LNER in Wartime', written by Norman Crump. The LNER published it in 1947. Its 250 pages include fifty black-and-white photographs, most of them occupying a full page.

Among the chapters are: preparations for war (including the evacuation of children); the black-out;  Dunkirk and after; air raids on London; air raids outside London; the LNER's contributions to shipping; new lines, sidings, stations and warehouses that had to be built; railwaymen and women; conveying coal and munitions; military equipment made in the LNER workshops; troop movements; dealing with ordinary traffic too; servicing the airfields; the LNER's part in D-Day; coping with the flying bombs; and Victory.

There is lots of detail about the GE Section. Chapter 1 starts with what happened at Soham. There are plenty of anecdotes about events during the air raids, mentioning individuals concerned by name. When it deals with supplying the airfields with bombs it records the three bomb stores at Brandon, Earsham and Bures and lists the number of wagonloads of US bombs each received in the three months following D-Day - Earsham for example handled 7,883 wagons at its own siding, while 2,518 destined for them were unloaded at Ellingham and 857 at Tivetshall. The difficulties in working the fuel store at Hethersett are described.

When you purchase this you will receive two files to download. The main one is the book, the other shows the map folded inside the back cover. This map is undated, and does not appear to relate particularly to the War: it depicts England, Wales and Scotland, and is marked to show the LNER lines plus lines which had LNER through services to places such as Swansea and Penzance! The file of the book is word-searchable and has bookmarks.

They will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
