For enthusiasts and researchers of the Great Eastern Railway

MG013: Five early issues of 'Trains Illustrated', 1946-1948.

NEW MARCH 2021.  'Trains Illustrated' magazine appeared soon after the Second World War. There was initially no attempt at making it a monthly or bi-monthly periodical, and it came out at irregular intervals when sufficient paper was available.

The first sixteen issues were numbered, therefore. Here you get five of them: No. 3, whose editorial bore the date September 1946; No. 6, May 1947; No. 7, August 1947; No. 9, April 1948; and No. 11, October 1948. There are 200 pages in total. Items relating to East Anglia include a full-page picture of 2846 Gilwell Park in platform 4 at Ipswich on a Norwich train; an Essex railway byway (Corringham to Coryton); a lively account by C J Allen of his first footplate journey (on the Norfolk Coast Express back in 1908); and a photo of J69 E8619 as Liverpool Street pilot.

When glossy paper could be used, as on the front covers and a few internal pages, the photographs are quite clear. Most pages at the time were of poor quality paper, however, and on those ones photographs were more like the ones in newspapers.

As a bonus the file also contains a four-page 'Spottings and Jottings' No. 2, described as the official organ of the Ian Allen Locospotters Club - this happened to be tucked into 'Trains Illustrated' No. 11, and contains a small photograph of B1 61041 leaving Norwich Thorpe with the up East Anglian. It also has a railway crossword for you to try - but unfortunately you will have missed the deadline to enter it for a prize!

It is hoped to offer a complete file of 'Trains Illustrated' 1-16 at some time in the future. To achieve that, if anyone has a copy of  Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10 or 12 which they would be willing to lend for a few days to be scanned, please let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. (No. 5 and above have their number displayed on the front cover. The only identification with No. 3 is the editorial, which begins "This booklet is the third of a series...", and something similar applies to Nos. 1, 2 and perhaps 4.)

Please don't hold back and wait to see if the whole set appears in due course. If it does, you will be able to claim £1 off the price because you have already purchased these five. Certainly the others will never get scanned if those attract few purchasers, and 20p an issue is surely quite a bargain?

The file is word-searchable and has bookmarks to the separate issues. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
