MG012: 'Railway Notes' Volume 1, 1909.

NEW AUGUST 2020.  The 1909 volume of Railway Notes ('Volume 1') appears to be quite a rare item. When this description was being written, no copies of Railway Notes were available second hand; the strongly railway-orientated library at Leicester University does not have it; and its very existence does not appear to be recognised on the internet. Here it is, though.

It was a monthly publication. Each issue contained between 8 and 12 fairly large glossy pages, so in total 1909 had 126 editorial pages plus 4 pages of index. There were lots of photographs, mainly 'snapshots' provided by a group of photographers rather than posed official pictures - it may well be that these have not appeared anywhere else. Their quality is reasonable for the time, but unfortunately they are generally small.

The GER features only in some of the short news paragraphs, but there is a two-part illustrated article on the London Tilbury and Southend Railway locomotives and their work.

To see what else there is, the index to photographs, articles and paragraphs is provided HERE for you to consult. Please note that the extraneous grubby marks on some pages are unique to the index, and do not occur in the actual magazine.

The publication is something of a mystery. Its editor was anonymous but lived at 69 Westmoreland Road in Bromley, Kent. Page 1 of Volume 1 begins by saying "The success of 'Railway Notes' in its old form has encouraged us to publish it in future as a printed monthly magazine...".  As you will find, the December issue contains an insert inviting readers to place a subscription for a Volume 2. Robert Humm wrote an article in the RCHS Journal entitled 'Three forgotten periodicals':  in it, he said "Without doubt Railway Notes is the most obscure of the three..." We learn that the 1910 volume did appear, but that the enterprise folded in 1911.
