For enthusiasts and researchers of the Great Eastern Railway

LCM.DVD The Locomotive Magazine 1896-1923

NEW MARCH 2019. In the early 1890s the company of F. Moore was founded, supplying photographs and coloured prints of locomotives. (There was actually nobody called F. Moore: it was started by two brothers who were employees of the GER, and used the pseudonym so the railway company would not find out what they were up to!). In 1896 they started publishing 'Moore's Monthly'. The following year it was renamed 'The Locomotive Magazine', and subsequently gained the full title of 'The Locomotive Magazine and Railway Carriage & Wagon Review'. It always came out monthly, except in 1903 when as a short-lived experiment it was issued every week.

Our pair of DVDs contains every copy from the very beginning in January 1896 until December 1923, a huge 376 issues in total, taking us right through to the formation of the 'big-four' companies.

It should be mentioned that our aim has been to provide every page of the magazines themselves over that period. The editors were in the habit of producing occasional extras which they called supplements (ranging from single full-page photographs to complete extra magazines, usually filled with illustrations).  When these supplements were present with the magazines which we were able to borrow, scans of them are included. During a hundred years and more they often became separated from the magazines, however, and of course if they were not there we were unable to scan them.

We have compiled an edited contents list for all the magazines, and this runs to 55 pages. It is included on the DVDs to help you to target your browsing, and is also available for you to download HERE to give you an idea of what you will get if you choose to purchase them.

Our DVDs also offer other ways to navigate your way through the 376 issues. There is a facility we have added to carry out a rapid word-search of the whole lot. In addition you get a 161-page file containing the original printed indexes from all 29 of the bound volumes. These were of a high standard, with just one exception: 'correspondence' was often listed like that, with no breakdown of topics. That material did contain some interesting snippets, so to ensure they are also accessible to seekers we have compiled our own index to the correspondence.

As a bonus a history of the magazine over its lifetime is there, and so too are some sample adverts from the period.

If you place an order for this item, the DVDs will be posted to you. An amount to help towards postage and packing will be added at the checkout, before you commit yourself to buy.

NOTE:-

1. These are data DVDs not video DVDs. They will not play on an ordinary domestic DVD player.

2. If your computer is unable to cope with handling DVDs, we are offering a new service – to have the files placed on your own USB memory stick which you send us. For details see here.
