NEW SEPTEMBER 2018. This DVD contains all 24 sheets of Stanford's Maps of London, undated but around 1885. Their 6-inches-to-a-mile scale is large enough to show individual buildings, many of which are identified by name (e.g. ragged school, manure works, the Gaiety theatre and ‘The Lord Nelson’). The maps were hand-coloured to indicate tram/omnibus routes (horse-drawn, of course), public open spaces, railway stations and London postal districts.
Railways in a goods depot or approaching a terminus show as sets of lines, but the scale is not large enough to depict every siding – for the complete trackwork, a 25-inch scale would be needed.
The maps reach far enough out to include the following locations. To the north: Golders Green, Highgate station, Crouch End, Harringay station, St Anns Road station and Walthamstow cemetery (just the southern part). To the east: Leytonstone station, Stratford and Maryland Point, West Ham, Canning Town, Bow Creek, Blackwall Reach, Greenwich, Blackheath station (just), Lee Green (part), Hither Green and Bromley, Kent (part). To the west: Cricklewood, Willesden (part), Kensal Rise station, Wormwood Scrubs station, Shepherds Bush station, Hammersmith station, Fulham, Putney, Wimbledon and Raynes Park station (just). To the south: Morden station, Mitcham (part), Norbury station, South Norwood (part), Anerley station, Kent House station and Beckenham station.
Twenty-three of the 24 sheets are in good condition. Sheet 10 however has at some time in the past had its left hand margin cut off (which does not affect the map itself), but has also been folded in half horizontally and vertically, and the traces of those folds do reduce the clarity of tiny parts of that map.
Each sheet is supplied on the DVD as a PDF file, intended for viewing on-screen. These files, in a folder named 'Maps for viewing', are of a high quality, enabling zooming in to show fine detail.
A second folder is labelled ‘Maps for printing’. This contains every sheet as a huge TIFF file. The original sheets each measured approximately 18 inches by 15 inches. If you elect to take the DVD to a local printer or to a copy shop, they should be able to use it to print out for you a full-size colour copy of your chosen map on a sheet of A2 paper.
Bonus files include a brief history of Edward Stanford and of the company he formed.
If you place an order for this item, the DVD will be posted to you. A charge to cover postage and packing is added at the checkout before you commit yourself to buy.
NOTE:-
1. This is a data DVD not a video one. It will not play on an ordinary domestic DVD player.
2. If your computer is unable to cope with handling DVDs, we are offering a new service – to have the files placed on your own USB memory stick which you send us. For details see here.
3. You can also purchase and download the contents of the DVD here.
