LM048 The Stone-Vapor Steam Generator

NEW JULY 2018.  Carriages were once heated by steam, which presented a problem when diesel locomotives were used.  The solution was to fit the locomotives with a steam generator for the purpose, run from diesel fuel.

This is a 30-page instruction booklet, undated but probably from the late 1950s, for the Stone-Vapor Steam Generators made by J Stone & Co of Deptford.  They were fitted to some Class 22 (D6306-D6357); all Class 23 "Baby Deltic";  all Class 24;  all Class 26; some class 35 "Hymek" (D7000-D7044);  all Class 40;  all class 43 "Warship"; class 44, 45/0, some class 46 (D138-D165) "Peak";  and some class 47s.

The instructions cover starting the boiler, putting it into stand-by mode, returning it back to normal operation and shutting it down.  Freezing weather precautions are given, and fault finding is described.  There are diagrams of the necessary electrical connections, plus a coloured drawing depicting the pipework involved.

At the back are three pages of hand-written notes outlining the procedures involved when using the boiler.  As an added bonus, three blank pages near the back have what appear to be the signals in sequence from Cambridge to King's Lynn!

The file has bookmarks to all the sections and is word-searchable. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
