TW079: Appendix to the Rules and Working Timetables, LNER Southern Area 1942.
NEW JANUARY 2024. Dated 4 May 1942, its full title is the Appendix to the Rules & Regulations and Working Timetables for the Southern Area of the LNER (and is effectively the practical application of the railway's rules to its everyday workings). It is a substantial book with 447 pages, displayed one page at a time. The quality of the paper used and of its overall production were typical for the austerity standards of wartime.
The first 275 pages provide those practical details relating to the rules and regulations. They cover topics such as the general working of trains (including the standard headlamp and whistle codes), the carriage of different types of freight and livestock., signalling and single line working).
Special instructions concerning specific locations follow. These are divided into the Central Section, the Northern Section and the Eastern Section - corresponding to the old GCR, GNR and GER respectively.
Our thanks go to Mike Bootman who supplied the book and Nick Ellis who saw to its scanning.
