SG070: Colour Light Signals for Trainmen, LNER 1933 and 1938.
NEW MAY 2022. During the 1930s the LNER began to install colour light signals on some of the GE suburban lines. You can see examples of this if you scroll down to the section on Related Products.
Train crews needed to be given guidance about these new signals, and here you will get two separate items for this purpose. Both necessarily have colour added to their black and white printing.
The first is LNER Instruction No. 2717, issued by H H Mauldin in November 1933. Basically it is just a single large sheet of paper about 16 inches wide and 13 inches high, folded once in the centre, so it would be easiest to read it if pinned on a notice board. A note says the information applies particularly to the new signalling between Gidea Park and Brentwood.
The second item is a 24-page paper-covered pocket book issued at Liverpool Street in October 1938. The book is soiled, dog-eared, falling to bits and crumbling. The text is all complete apart from some of the back page, however, and even there none of the meaning is lost. The book was scanned successfully, so its information is thereby preserved and is again widely accessible.
This book includes a description of the colour light signalling to expect, and deals with automatic and semi-automatic signals. Other topics covered include the working of ground frames in such areas, notes on modifications required to the general rules, and a glossary of standard signalling terms and their meanings. We have made it word-seachable and have added bookmarks to its sections.
These two files will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
