For enthusiasts, researchers and modellers of the Great Eastern Railway

TP033: Eastern National Bus Timetables, November 1961.

NEW MAY 2021. To fully understand the railways of the twentieth century, you need to know about the world in which they were operating. The bus services of East Anglia formed a significant part of that: sometimes the buses were in competition with the railways, and sometimes they were co-operating.

Here you can see the timetables commencing 26 November 1961 for the Eastern National Omnibus Company, covering most of Essex. The only services not listed are ones in the Southend area worked jointly with Southend Corporation, which were in a different timetable booklet. Because these tables were issued in November, obviously the summer-only services to holiday parks and such like are not there, so what you get is the basic year-round network for the residents. The long-distance coach timetables for summer 1962 are there, however, presumably to help plan your next summer holiday.

The 200-page book includes the regulations for passengers to observe, details of the parcels service the Company offered, a list of all the parcels agents, information about the Gravesend and Shotley ferries and some advertisements for coach tours and holidays.

You will download three files: the main one is the timetable book, the others are the fold-out maps in the back of it. One shows all the bus routes plus railway lines - Kelvedon to Tiptree and Bishops Stortford to Braintree had already closed, but the Brightlingsea branch and the Colne valley and Stour Valley lines were still open. Both maps show coach services as letters, but these were due to be changed the following summer: service D on the maps, for instance, now became service X10 in the tables.

The main file has bookmarks and is word-searchable. All the files will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
