RH067 James Holden
NEW APRIL 2019. James Holden was the GER's Locomotive Superintendent from 1885 to 1907. The main part of this file is a twelve-page Illustrated Interview with him, which appeared in the Railway Magazine for May 1900.
Topics discussed include the new 4-4-0 No. 1900, how it would be got to the Paris Exhibition and that the GER was also responsible for providing the length of track it was to stand on there; the possibility of moving the Works from Stratford and Temple Mills out into the country, to escape the very high rates levied by the Borough of West Ham; the use of oil fuel to avoid high coal prices, but that the price of oil has now shot up as well; the testing of water supplies and constructional materials in the laboratory at Stratford; the enginemen's dormitory at Stratford; the widening of the suburban carriage stock; proposals for improved brakes; and the instituting of a GER workmen's Pension Fund. The article is illustrated with fourteen photographs.
As a bonus, one further page has been added. This comes from the Locomotive Magazine of October 1907 and is a tribute to James Holden on his retirement. (This issue of that magazine, together with 375 others, can be obtained on our double DVD of the Locomotive Magazine 1896-1923.)
The file will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
