NEW AUGUST 2021.  In 1899 several commercial engineering concerns in the town got together and formed the Ipswich Engineering Society. To mark its jubilee in 1949, the Society produced a book entitled 'The History of Engineering in Ipswich'. That is what this file provides.

The book is an enterprising venture which was published by W S Cowell of the Butter Market, Ipswich in 1950. It is a quality hardback with 135 pages. There are plenty of black and white photographs depicting locations, products and portraits (of Robert Ransome, Richard Rapier and others). Both endpapers contain a double page reproduction of a large-scale 1778 map of Ipswich by Joseph Pennington: this is slightly blurred in the original, but nevertheless the scans are readable.

There are chapters on the Engineering Society itself; the port of Ipwich; Ipswich sewerage (which Peter Bruff was involved with) and sewage disposal; transport in Ipswich; the fire brigade; and the Ipswich Gas Light Company. These are followed by another eleven chapters, each taking one particular firm and describing its history through to the present day (1949). You can read a list of them all HERE.
