RG024 Railways of the Millwall and India Docks

  • RG024 Railways of the Millwall and India Docks

NEW SEPTEMBER 2017. The first page is a plate from a photograph of a Royal Albert Docks train, which appeared in Moore's Monthly Magazine in 1896. This publication only lasted a year, after which it became the Locomotive Magazine.  The rest of this file contains articles from the latter, at various dates between 1902 and 1904.

First comes a three-part series entitled 'The Locomotives of the London and India Dock Company', which includes eleven photographs. Then follows a two-part article describing the Millwall Extension Railway, with three photographs - it deals with the line, its development and some of its locomotives including Aerial's Girdle.  There are no maps or scale drawings in either article.

Three small bonuses are included, which chanced to be on the same pages as parts of those articles.  One is a photograph and brief account of GER express single No. 12, which had just been fitted with an extended smokebox. Another is a quarter-page note reporting that the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway had been opened from Haughley to Laxfield for goods traffic - the complete system, we are told, is due to run from Haughley to Halesworth, with a branch from Bedingfield to Westerfield. The third is news that the Kelvedon Tiptree and Tollesbury Light Railway was now open for public traffic, and included a short description of the line.
