RG064: The Railways of the Port of London Authority.
NEW MARCH 2024. This is the classic book on the subject - 'P.L.A. Railways',published by the Locomotive Publishing Company in 1952. It was wrirttern by Thomas B Peacock. Its one and only edition is much sought after, and a second-hand copy when available will cost you anything from £40 upwards.
Geographically the docks are considered in three groups: the 'Royal' Docks, the Millwall Docks and Tilbuiry Docks. Maps are provided for each set of lines.
The book's 132 pages include 45 photographs - the frontispiece is in colour and all the others are in decent-quality black and white, capturing some of the atmosphere of the docks railways. There are also several extracts from relevant documents, such as a hand-written page from the train register book from Gallions signal box on a day in 1897. Near the end of the book is a nine-page section giving details of each locomotive. You can read the full list of contents HERE.
