RG058: The Cambridge to Hitchin line.
NEW AUGUST 2023. This file provides two separate illustrated articles from the Railway Magazine. They both describe the line from Cambridge to Hitchin, used by trains to Kings Cross, but appeared at very different times.
The first comes from the issue for September 1952, was written by G F Oakman and is entitled 'The Hitchin-Cambridge Line'. The second, from July 1918, is 'The Great Northern Route to Cambridge' by H L Hopwood (an article which also appears in our files RG037 and TO002). Between them you get ten photographs, two maps and a gradient profile of the line.
A bonus is a set of nine pages each containing a further relevant photograph at locations from Cambridge to Hitchin. These are samples taken from our catalogue of Sales photographs.
If this line is of interest to you, you may also wish to consider our Files TO001, TO026 and TO031. These contain logs of journeys over the LNER between 1935 and 1947. The recorder was a Cambridge undergraduate and include several runs from there to London, many of which were to Kings Cross.
The file is word-searchable. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
